2 people dead in Highway 97 crash north of Quesnel

Highway 97 between Quesnel and Prince George was closed for several hours Thursday night into Friday morning, Sept 4 and 5 due to a vehicle crash.

UPDATE 11 a.m.

Two people have died as a result of a crash that occurred on Highway 97 north of Quesnel late Thursday night.

The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on Highway 97 at Dunkley Road when a transport truck collided with a sedan. 

When first responders arrived at the scene, they confirmed the two occupants in the sedan had died at the scene. 

The transport truck driver was stuck on their vehicle as a result of the crash. With assistance from Highway Rescue, they were extracted and transported to Prince George with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

"A traffic reconstructionist attended the scene to conduct a comprehensive examination and collect further evidence to advance the investigation," said Quesnel RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Robert Belanger.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors in the incident.

Highway 97 between Quesnel and Prince George has reopened following a crash that occurred late Thursday night.

A multiple vehicle incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 97 and Dunkley Road. 

The crash caused the highway to be closed in both directions between Dunkley Road and Cinema Road for several hours. It opened to single-lane alternating at 6 a.m. before reopening fully around 7:30 a.m.

It's unknown how many vehicles were involved in the crash and if anyone was injured.
