Police officers have observed people carrying replica firearms at the fall fair, raising concerns, the Smithers RCMP said in a Facebook post this afternoon (Aug. 22).
"These replicas closely resemble real firearms, and officers must treat them as real until confirmed otherwise," the release stated.
While these replicas are not inherently life-threatening, it is still illegal to brandish them in public and can lead to charges similar to possession of a real weapon.
Recently, in Terrace, while not charged with criminal offences, three men were issued warnings by RCMP for shooting off airsoft handguns in a parking lot in that city.
"Police appreciate the community鈥檚 cooperation in helping keep the fall fair a safe and enjoyable event for everyone," Smithers RCMP said.
