UNBC computer science assistant professor Dr. Sajal Saha recently received a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Discovery Grant where he will receive $222,500 over a five-year span for his project using AI to combat cyber attacks in real time.

A professor in Prince George has received a grant to help his study about using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fight cyber attacks in real time.

On Thursday, Aug. 21, the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) announced that computer science assistant professor Dr. Sajal Saha recently received a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Discovery Grant. For his project, he will receive $222,500 over a five-year span.

In his project, he is trying to create an AI response system that can detect and fight a cyber attack in real time, instead of relying on human experts and learning about the attack before its too late.

"We are building smart cybersecurity systems that can identify, act and protect on their own,鈥 said Saha, who will be working on the project with 10 students - six at the graduate level and four undergraduates.

The project aims to create safer, smarter networks, particularly for emerging technologies like 6G by combining Internet traffic forecasting, machine learning and large language models.

鈥淎s networks like 6G grow, we need fast, reliable and explainable tools to keep them safe,鈥 Saha added.
