Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Grace Lore shared that she will be undergoing surgery next week in an update posted to Instagram on July 11.
In late 2024, Lore announced that she had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer shortly after being re-elected to her seat in the B.C. Legislature. She said at the time she was temporarily stepping down from her role as the Minister of Children and Family Development so she could focus on her cancer treatment.
In the update posted to social media, she thanked the community for the "kindness, love, and patience" before explaining that after three months of chemotherapy, she developed acute toxicity and she will head into surgery next week.
"I鈥檝e been a bit quiet over here because we hit a few bumps, after three months of chemo I developed acute toxicity 鈥� turns out my chemo was as hard on all my organs as it was on my cancer," she said in the video. "We waited for me to recover enough to restart chemo but it was a long haul and we ended up needing to switch to plan B."
She said she is currently feeling well and strong, and she reminded the community to stay vigilant as colorectal cancer is on the rise.
"Also - and who wants to talk about this - but colorectal cancer is on the rise in young people - so pay attention to your body and if you notice a change, or blood, please get yourself checked," she noted
Lore was first elected as an MLA in 2020, before capturing a second term in the 2024 provincial election. She says her community office and team is still available to support the community while she continues to navigate her health issues.
