PHOTOS: Snowbirds highlight Penticton Peach Festival's opening night

Despite a storm delay, the show was a go over Okanagan Lake

For the first time in six years, the skies above Peach Fest in Penticton were filled with the roar of jet engines as the Snowbirds put on their show.

The Royal Canadian Air Force's popular aerial acrobatics team took to the skies during the Penticton Peach Festival opening night on Aug. 6.

Heavy rainfall and lightning from a stormfront passed through the region, sending people scrambling for any bit of cover and delaying the Snowbirds for an hour.

The rain passed, and with sun shining through gaps between the clouds, they were still able to put on their full high-altitude show for the hundreds of people lining the beaches, filling Okanagan Lake Park and at vantage points all around the lake including atop Munson Mountain.

Before the Snowbirds took to the skies, there were other high-flying shows for people to enjoy.

The Canadian Tire Mega Motocross set up on the road outside of Okanagan Lake Park for two shows on Wednesday's opening day, and they're set for more shows on Thursday, Aug. 7 (noon and 3 p.m.) and Friday, Aug. 8 (noon and 3 p.m.).

The Skyhawks took several passes through sky, coming down with a B.C. flag, Canada flag, smoke trails and plenty of other stunts.

The winds that heralded the later storm which delayed the Snowbirds also impacted the Skyhawks show.

One of the parachutists had a hard landing, but was able to get back to their feet with the assistance of teammates and the ready medical team.

Peach Fest continues through to Aug. 10 with days packed with entertainment, including the grand parade on Aug. 9
