Burnaby golfer leading the way heading into final round at B.C. Juniors

17-year-old carries 13-stroke lead heading into Friday's final round at Victoria's Gorge Vale Golf Club

Zhehui Yu has one hand on the trophy 鈥 but the battle for pride, podiums, and provincial team spots is still raging at Gorge Vale.

The 2025 B.C. Junior Girls Golf Championship wraps up Friday at the Esquimalt course, with Yu carrying a commanding 13-stroke lead into the final round.

The Burnaby North Secondary student set the tone early with a bogey-free 64 on Canada Day 鈥 the lowest round of the tournament by far 鈥 and followed it up with rounds of 71 and 74.

At -10 through 54 holes, the Pitt Meadows Golf Club member is all but certain to claim the individual title.

But behind her, a strong contingent of Greater Victoria golfers is making its presence known.

Emma Kral leads the local charge in solo third place at four-over (75-73-75), one shot back of Lilian Zhao for second.

The Victoria product also leads the two-player better-ball competition alongside Royal Bay鈥檚 Vienna Scheffer. The pair sits at 12-under, three strokes clear of the next team entering Friday鈥檚 finale.

Scheffer, currently tied for 10th overall after rounds of 78, 77, and 83, said she鈥檚 looking to bounce back after a tough day off the tee.

鈥淚t was not my best 鈥 just struggled with hitting fairways today and a couple of big numbers, but it was fun,鈥 said Scheffer, who plays out of Bear Mountain and Olympic View. 鈥淗opefully I can figure out the driver and put it together a little bit more, make fewer big numbers, a couple more birdies and hopefully we can go low.鈥

The Grade 11 golfer has been training daily and has more events lined up this summer, prior to her senior year at Royal Bay.

Anna Wu rounds out the trio of locals who made the cut. She sits in sixth place after steady rounds of 73, 81, and 73.

In total, six Greater Victoria golfers teed off to start the week, with 20 players in total making the cut after Wednesday鈥檚 second round.

There鈥檚 more than individual hardware at stake on Friday 鈥 the top three finishers will earn spots on Team B.C. for the inter-provincial team competition at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship, taking place Aug. 13-16 in Sainte Marie, Que.

Earlier in the week, Kral and Scheffer helped the Zone 5 team to a dominant win in the 36-hole team event, finishing at 11-over and cruising past the Zone 2 team of Ellie Johnson and Tierra Elchuk by 19 shots.

Tee times begin at 8 a.m. on July 4, with the final trio 鈥 including runaway leader Yu 鈥 set to tee off at 9.

Gorge Vale鈥檚 big tournament future is also coming into focus.

The A.V. Macan-designed course will host the 125th B.C. Men鈥檚 Amateur Championship in 2027 to mark its 100th anniversary
