A trio of young artists have made the shortlist in the Lakes District Museum鈥檚 centennial art competition.
Of the 10 entrants in the junior (under age 19) category, three 鈥 Ali Lutick, Lily Shively, and Lela Thiessen 鈥 have been named finalists in the competition. Although only one of them can win the event, all will receive significant prizes.
To be considered for the competition, artists had to submit a sample of their work. The winning entries 鈥 Lutick鈥檚 I Hate Being Bipolar, It鈥檚 Awesome, 厂丑颈惫别濒测鈥檚 Butterflies, and Thiessen鈥檚 Teal Crystal Dragon 鈥 were then judged on seven criteria: visual impact, craftsmanship, composition, use of colour, creativity, how well they captured a moment or mood, and their degree of difficulty.
While the quality of all the entries impressed the judges, the submission pieces by the three shortlisted candidates proved that talent knows no age limit. One of the shortlisted artists hasn鈥檛 been a teenager long.
鈥淎ll three have very distinct styles, and the submission pieces were very well done,鈥 noted a member of the jury. 鈥淲e have some very talented young artists.鈥
鈥淲e were blown away by the skill displayed by the young people who entered this competition,鈥 added Michael Riis-Christianson, curator of the Lakes District Museum & Gallery. 鈥淲e hope that the encouragement these artists receive from the judges will prompt them to pursue careers in the arts. One thing is certain: their efforts have already enriched our community.鈥
The three shortlisted artists are looking forward to learning the competition鈥檚 results.
鈥淚t means a lot to have this opportunity to share my art and get to see 鈥 and, hopefully, learn from 鈥 the other artists and their work,鈥 noted Lutick upon learning she had made the shortlist. 鈥淚t feels really good to know that other people appreciate my art. I know there are many incredible artists in this area so I鈥檓 a bit surprised and very grateful for the chance to win junior centennial artist and participate in the event.鈥
Thiessen is equally pleased about being selected. 鈥淚 think it is a great honor to be chosen based on my artwork. I feel like it really shows that there is a payoff and appreciation for all my hard work and [the] development of my artistic skills. I love that the judges love my work. It makes me want to show them more.鈥
