12 heat records broken across B.C.

For the second straight day, multiple B.C. communities broke heat records on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Lytton reached the highest temperature in the province, reaching 40 C, beating its 2022 record by 0.4 C. Records have been kept in the area since 1921.

Cache Creek was a close second by touching 39.3 C, breaking the previous record of 34.6 C in 2022. Records have been kept in the area since 1944.

In third, Princeton soared to 38.8 C on Tuesday, breaking a 27-year-old record of 36.5 C, which was set in 1998. Records have been kept in the area since 1893.

Next was Kelowna as temperatures reached 37.1 C. That broke the eight-year record of 36.2 C in 2017. Records have been kept in the area since 1899.

Clearwater broke a record by two degrees, reaching 36.6 C. The previous record was 34.6 C, set in 2022. Records have been kept in the area since 1913.

Lillooet broke the oldest record of the day, 91 years in the making. On Tuesday, the municipality got up to 36.5 C, breaking the previous record of 36.1 C, set in 1934. Records have been kept in the area since 1917.

Vernon was the third Okanagan town to break a record, as 36.2 C was recorded on Tuesday. The previous high was 34.8 C,  set in 2017. Records have been kept in the area since 1900.

Whistler isn't quite ready for the winter sports season yet, as temperatures reached 34.9 C. Back in 1988, the previous record of 33.4 C was broken. Records have been kept in the area since 1950.

Clinton also beat a record dating back to 1988, reaching 34.3 C on Tuesday. The previous record of 31 C. Records have been kept in the area since 1974.

Tatlyoko Lake, an area currently in the vicinity of many wildfires, reached 32.8 C on Tuesday, breaking a 38-year-old record, which was 31 C in 1988. Records have been kept in the area since 1930.

Smithers beat a 51-year-old record by 0.2 of a degree, reaching 30.8 C. The previous record of 30.6 C, was set in 1974. Records have been kept in the area since 1938.

Lastly, Mackenzie reached 29 degrees on Tuesday, breaking its 2022 record by one degree (28 C). Records have been kept in the area since 1971.

For Lytton, Cache Creek, Clearwater, Clinton, Lillooet, Lytton, Princeton, Tatlayoko Lake, Vernon, it was their second straight day breaking a record.

  • Lillooet: 36.5 C, previous record of 36.1 C set in 1934
  • Lytton: 40 C, previous record of 39.6 C set in 2022
  • Mackenzie: 29 C, previous record of 28 C set in 2022
  • Princeton: 38.8 C, previous record of 36.5 C set in 1998
  • Smithers: 30.8 C, previous record of 30.6 C set in 1974
  • Tatlayoko Lake: 32.8 C, previous record of 31 C set in 1988
  • Vernon: 36.2 C, previous record of 34.8 C set in 2017
  • Whistler: 34.9 C, previous record of 33.4 C set in 1988.
