There's a new academic sheriff in town at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC).
On Tuesday, Aug. 19, UNBC announced that Michel S. Beaulieu will be joining the school on Oct. 4 as the new Provost and Vice President Academic. He's making the move to Prince George from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont., where he was the Associate Vice-Provost (Academic).
鈥淯NBC鈥檚 bold vision to re-imagine education, research and learning in the face of a changing future resonates deeply with my commitment to fostering inclusive, innovative and impactful opportunities,鈥 said Beaulieu in a press release. 鈥淚 look forward to connecting with, listening to and working alongside UNBC鈥檚 students, faculty, staff and community partners to provide exceptional learning experiences and further enhance the University鈥檚 role as a leader in academic excellence.鈥
Beaulieu was at Lakehead University for more than 20 years, where he held many different leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of History, coordinator of Interdisciplinary Programs in Northern Studies and Director of two research centres. He became the school's Associate Vice-Provost (Academic) in 2019, where he provided strategic direction for building and creating academic and non-academic programs, supported the administration of academic affairs and operations at Lakehead鈥檚 campuses and partner institutions, and fostered meaningful engagement with the broader communities.
"Throughout the selection process, Beaulieu demonstrated a keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead as UNBC works to expand educational pathways for students and empower communities across northern B.C. He brings a wealth of experience in academic leadership, innovative program development and relationship-building to advance this work,鈥 said UNBC President Geoff Payne.
Payne also thanked Bill Owen for his leadership in the interim role.
Beaulieu's contributions to education over the years have earned him many honours, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal and the Ontario Historical Society鈥檚 Cruikshank Gold Medal.
