Lakes Animal Friendship Society mourns passing of dedicated volunteer

This is one of our favourite old photos of Monika. Here she is, quietly reading to Morgan while they try to gain the trust of stray dog Misty. The MacDonalds adopted Misty, and it took weeks to fully gain her trust - but what a lovely match it was. Morgan was Misty鈥檚 best friend in the world.

We were devastated by the recent passing of Monika MacDonald (Eriksen). She was a long-time volunteer and supporter of Lakes Animal Friendship, but that was only part of what made her so special. We want to take a brief moment to celebrate her legacy of kindness.

Monika cared deeply about people, community, the environment and all the wild plants and creatures. She was highly curious and was always looking for ways that she could do things a bit differently 鈥 even in her career in forestry. And by differently, I mean kinder.

When you are trying to help in a cause like animal welfare, there are different ways to do it. Some folks are short on time and choose to donate money, others volunteer, and you can literally bring that commitment home. The farm that Monika shared with her family has always been a safe place for horses, dogs, chickens and other creatures who needed a home with extra care and attention. They even gave up their greenhouse to provide a sanctuary for a one-eyed rooster!

We should never be shy about doing our part to make the world a better place. Life is short, sometimes unfairly so. But there is a secret to multiplying the impact you can have, and this is something Monika lived.

All this curiosity, care, commitment and kindness continues in Monika鈥檚 children, Taylor and Morgan. This is something that you might say was in their DNA, but it was nurtured and cultivated by their mom. From an early age these two girls put their time, attention and even birthday money toward helping the animals. As an adult, Taylor continues to transform the lives of horses in her care. Morgan was one of the most dedicated community volunteers at our most recent spay / neuter clinic, earning accolades from her hero and 鈥渟tealth volunteer鈥 Amber Marshall.

The kids who participated in Monika鈥檚 Spirit North programs were treated to inspiration and enthusiasm for the outdoors, nature and physical activity. She taught the kids to see the world differently, to wonder and ask questions, and think about their place in it. They will carry these lessons through their whole lives and pass them on to the ones they love and mentor.

The many coworkers and friends who were fortunate enough to share a walk in the forest with Monika will all have their own examples of how their perspectives were changed in that same soft, curious and practical way.

That is the challenge we can accept while dealing with the sadness: to make sure we do our best to be kind to others, ourselves and the world around us, and nurture that kindness in others, especially children. That is the best way we can leave a legacy, and honour Monika.
