An early morning incident on Ridley Island suspended all operations and evacuated the entire site.
At approximately 6:20 a.m., AltaGas experienced an unintended release of propane at the Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal which resulted in a vapour cloud above the facility. All terminal operations were immediately suspended as the situation was addressed and investigated.
As of 8:47 a.m., the source was contained and isolated, allowing for AltaGas' emergency response plan to stand down.
"Our priority remains focused on the safety of people, communities and the environment," AltaGas stated. "We are continuing to monitor air quality and have not seen any levels of concern."
AltaGas added that it does not expect any further emergency responses or evacuations, especially as winds in the area are helping to disperse the vapour cloud.
"We continue to engage with governments, regulatory agencies and local communities as we resolve this situation and look to resume normal operations," AltaGas stated.
With the situation stabilized, access to Ridley Island is underway and terminal operations are in the process of resuming, according to the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
The Port Authority added that all safety and emergency protocols were followed and no injuries were reported in regards to the event.
