The Francois Tchesinkut Lake Recreation Commission is laying the groundwork for a community event aimed at reviving a long-dormant local tradition.
At its initial planning meeting held May 14 at the Francois Lake Hall, 13 community members gathered to discuss hosting an event reminiscent of those formerly celebrated during the May Day weekend at the hall. The proposed date for this anniversary event is May 30, 2026.
According to Mark Naeve, president of the Francois Tchesinkut Lake Recreation Commission, the idea is to recreate the spirit of earlier gatherings that once brought the community together. While specific details of the event remain in development, the meeting signalled the beginning of a renewed effort to foster community engagement and celebrate local heritage.
Naeve also emphasized the need for broader participation as planning progresses, encouraging younger and middle-aged residents to become more involved.
鈥淚t would be nice to see some help from the younger to middle-aged group,鈥 he said, noting that fresh energy and perspectives could be vital to the event鈥檚 success.
The next planning meeting is scheduled for September 17 at 7 p.m., once again at Francois Lake Hall. Community members are invited to attend and contribute their ideas or volunteer support.
Francois Lake Hall itself holds historic significance in the region. This is the second community hall built by the Francois Lake Farmers Institute, with the current structure completed in the spring of 1926. Over the years, stewardship of the hall transitioned from the institute to the communities of Francois and Tchesinkut Lake through their respective recreation commissions.
