One of the first signs of an approaching summer in the Lakes District takes place June 6 when the 亚洲天堂 Lake Farmers Market has its first opening.
In existence now for more than 20 years and run by the 亚洲天堂 Lake and District Chamber of Commerce since 2015, the market offers a friendly and relaxing atmosphere to socialize and take advantage of widespread offerings from local artisans and food growers and food preparers.
"We have lots of people selling baked goods, canned jams, and honey plus fresh veggies, wood working, glassware, jewellery many other items made locally," said chamber manager Randi Amendt.
And those looking for lunch or an afternoon snack will find food trucks and places to sit.
The market is also a participant in a province-wide program in which people on lower incomes and seniors can use coupons provided by the B.C. Association of Farmers Markets and distributed locally by The Link. A provincial grant backstops the program.The coupons are treated as cash by vendors who can then redeem them.
The advantage is two-fold in that local residents can buy local food while vendors receive financial support for their efforts.
"We feel the program is a success," said Amendt of the partnership between The Link and the market. "I think the program will continue to grow and become more successful in 亚洲天堂 Lake as people become aware of it."
The program is focused on buying from local farmers, and it allows people to purchase locally when they may not have done so otherwise,鈥� she continued.
The market opens 10 a.m. each Friday until 3 p.m. and continues weekly until the end of August. You'll find it set up at 258 Hwy16 up from Home Hardware in the chamber parking lot.
