Early detection and swift action may have averted disaster at the North Pacific Cannery when a fire was ignited by a carelessly discarded cigarette during the final day of the Intertidal Music Festival July 20.

A carelessly discarded cigarette caused a fire at the North Pacific Cannery during the recently revived Intertidal Music Festival according to Heather Hadland-Dudoward, general manger of the national historic site.

She said the fire could have had devastating consequences for the historic site that has stood for 136 years without a major fire.

"[It is] a remarkable legacy of preservation and care to an important part of our local history," she said.

Hadland-Dudoward credits the sharp eye and swift action of Michelle Mintenko, owner and operator of Mama's Mess House, for spotting the smoke before the fire could spread.

"Her quick response was instrumental in preventing what could have been an unimaginable loss,"  Hadland-Dudoward said.

Julius Watts, co-owner of Santana Professional Sound and Lighting, and one of the festival organizers, was also instrumental in ensuring a safe evacuation and that the fire was fully extinguished. Hadland-Dudoward said his courage and determination were both "truly above and beyond."

"Most importantly, we are thankful for the rapid and professional response of the Port Edward Volunteer Fire Department," Hadland-Dudoward said. "Their presence and immediate action ensured that the situation was brought under control quickly and safely."

Hadland-Dudoward added that she is also thankful for everyone who was involved during the three-day event, especially those who ensured the safety of the cannery and others during the final moments of the festival.

The final scheduled act of the festival, Prince Rupert's Men Who Listen, was cancelled, ending the revived festival on a sour note.
