To the editor,
With regard to the article of June 25th involving two poisoned dogs on the Ts'il Kaz Koh reserve, I was the initial attending veterinarian for this emergency.
Only one young, unvaccinated dog was admitted for unresponsiveness and seizure activity. Its litter-mate/pack-mate had been found deceased in the owner's fenced yard hours earlier and was not available for an autopsy or toxicology.
The seizing dog was hospitalized for 24 hours, had blood analysis and was medically treated. The dog survived, but had life altering complications. Euthanasia was recommended due to these irreversible severe complications.
I spoke with a pathologist and the most likely suspected toxin would have been a neuro-muscular toxin.
I did not state that this poisoning was deliberate but the circumstance surrounding these two dogs was suspicious. These two healthy young dogs were in a well-fenced yard and apparently had not got out. A toxin was never identified nor found.
A very devastating loss for their owner.
Sincerely,
Dr. C Kuys
