Comment period opens for proposed open pit copper mine in B.C. Interior

An in-person information session about Tasekos Mine Ltd.'s proposed Yellowhead Copper Project in the North Thompson Valley will be held in Clearwater on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.

Public feedback is being invited for a proposed new open-pit copper mine located 150 kilometres northeast of Kamloops near the community of Vavenby.

The comment period lasts until Monday, Sept. 15 at 11:59 a.m.

Yellowhead Mining Inc., a subsidiary of Taseko Mines Ltd., is proposing to construct and operate the mine, which will be designed to produce 90,000 tons of ore per day over a 25-year mine life.

The company will also be responsible for the mine鈥檚 reclamation at the end.

Additionally, a transmission line - approximately 110 km-long - is being proposed to supply power during operations. It would eventually interconnect with the existing BC Hydro substation at 100 Mile House.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and British Columbia's Environmental Assessment Office (the EAO) are working cooperatively on the initial phase of the project's review.

Comments received will inform the IACC and EAO as they prepare a joint summary of issues and engagement documents to the proponent.

Information sessions

A virtual information session will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

An in-person session will be held in Clearwater on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at the Dutch Lake Community Centre Gym from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The in-person open house will include information booths to provide details on the project and the assessment processes. Federal and provincial officials and the proponent will be available to answer questions. The virtual information session will include presentations on the project and the assessment processes, with a question-and-answer session at the end.

The site for the project was acquired by Taseko in 2019. 

Aside from being within the Thompson Nicola Regional District, the project is also in Secwepemc煤l 虛ecw and primarily within Simpcw煤l 虛ecw, the territory of Simpcw. Chu Chua is the closest Simpcw community. 

The Government of British Columbia has requested that the federal impact assessment, if one is warranted, be substituted to the province.

If the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change grants the request, the EAO would conduct the project's impact assessment on behalf of IAAC, meeting both federal and provincial legislative requirements. IAAC is seeking comments on .
