The moderated discussion of the Terrace All Candidates Forum has been cancelled, as announced by the Terrace Chamber of Commerce in an email sent to the Chamber members on Thursday, April 10.
Ellis Ross of the Conservative Party of Canada and Adeana Young of the Green Party of Canada had already backed out earlier this week, but with Inderpal Dhillon of the Liberal Party of Canada backing out today, it leaves only the NDP incumbent Taylor Bachrach and Rod Taylor of the Christian Heritage Party of Canada. Both candidates still plan to be there at 5:30 p.m.
The Terrace Chamber encourages "everyone to leverage this opportunity to engage with Mr. Bachrach and Mr. Taylor directly."
Young backed out "family and previous travel arrangements," and Ross could not make it door knocking in other communities, as he is "trying his best to be in as many communities as possible." Dhillon backed out on Thursday because of scheduling conflicts due to engaging with residents in the Skeena-Bulkley Valley riding. "I want to assure my constituents that my absence was unavoidable," he said.
鈥淲here I come from, if you want the job you鈥檇 better be willing to show up for the interview. I certainly am," said Bachrach in a news release. "Terrace is a major community in our riding. Terrace residents deserve a chance to hear from the people who hope to represent them. It鈥檚 about accountability.鈥
"The date was set some time ago, along with events scheduled for Kitimat, Houston, 亚洲天堂 Lake and Prince Rupert," said CHPC candidate Taylor. "I have adjusted my schedule for all of those events as they are a critical part of allowing residents and voters to hear from all the candidates."
Bachrach thanked the Terrace Chamber of Commerce for their efforts in organizing the event.
鈥淚 imagine it鈥檚 been pretty frustrating for them too. Here鈥檚 a community group trying to uphold a long tradition and provide an important service to people,鈥 he said. 鈥淒espite providing plenty of notice to candidates, they鈥檝e been thwarted at the last minute.鈥
Bachrach has "encouraged his opponents to change their minds and face the voters."
"I look forward to the meeting tonight at the Sportsplex in Terrace," said the CHPC candidate.
